Chuan Bei Mu is bitter to drain out phlegm, sweet to tonify, and slightly cold to treat heat patterns involving phlegm. It enters the heart and lung systems.
Chuan Bei Mu is very useful in treating any type of cough. This includes productive coughs or cough with blood or from yin deficiency with extreme deficiency heat.

Contraindications: do not combine Chuan Bei Mu with Cao Wu, Chuan Wu, Fu Zi, Ku Shen, Kuan Dong Hua, She Chuang Zi, or Wu Tou, do not give Chuan Bei Mu to patients with phlegm originating from a cold pattern
