# Shan Dou Gen

### Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix

_bitter, cold_

#### PRIMARY FUNCTION:

_**Clears Heat and Resolves Toxicity**_

CLASSICAL MANIFESTATIONS:
- Sore throat
- Cancer
- Sores
- Abscess

Shan Dou Gen enters the lung and large intestine. It is cold and
bitter to detoxify and eliminate pathogens. It can be used alone as
a gargle for sore throat. It has also been used with patients that
have lung or throat cancer.

**Channels:** lung, large intestine

COMMON APPLICATIONS AND CLINICAL
POSSIBILITIES:
- Cancer treatment; lung and throat
- Pain in the gastrointestinal treat; excess heat
- Cough
- Dyspnea
- Ulcers
- Pain and swelling of the gums
- Antimicrobial
- Asthma

**Contraindications:** do not prescribe to patients that have a
weak spleen or stomach
