# Lian Zi

### Nelumbinis Semen

_sweet, astringent, neutral_

#### PRIMARY FUNCTION:

_**Stabilize and Bind**_

CLASSICAL MANIFESTATIONS:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Poor appetite
- Premature ejaculation
- Spermatorrhea
- Excess uterine bleeding
- Vaginal discharge
- Palpitations
- Anxiety
- Insomnia

Lian Zi is sweet, astringent, and neutral. It enters the kidney,
heart, and spleen.
The spleen and the heart, in Traditional East Asian Medicine, may
involve aspects of thyroid function. This could explain the use for
treating palpitations and anxiety as well as insomnia.
The spleen also encompasses the pancreas which managing blood
sugars through the hormones insulin and glucagon. This dynamic,
when in a state of dysregulation, will cause dysglycemic
fluctuations (spike and drops in blood sugar) which can also cause
palpitations, anxiety, and insomnia.

Lian Zi also stabilizes decline of sex hormones and can treat
patients with spermatorrhea, premature ejaculation, excess vaginal
discharge, and menorrhagia.

Lian Zi is used in the treatment of diarrhea and loss of appetite is
due to its support of splenic function which relates to the
exocrine function of the pancreas (enzyme secretion).

**Formulas:**
- Fu Tu Dan
- Dao Chi Qing Xin Tang
- Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan
- Qing Gong Tang
- Shen Ling Bai Zhu San

**Contraindications:** do not prescribe Lian Zi to patients that
are constipated or that suffer abdominal distention and bloating
