# Huang Qi

### Astragali Radix

_sweet, slightly warm_

#### PRIMARY FUNCTION:

_**Tonify Qi**_

- Postpartum fever

Huang Qi is sweet and slightly warm. It enters the spleen and lung
systems. Huang Qi is a very important herb for building immune
function. It strengths wei qi mechanisms and tightens the exterior.
For this reason, it should be discontinued during acute exterior
attacks during which time the exterior needs to be released.

The spleen is the largest lymph gland of the body and a major
aspect of the immune system. In Oriental Medical theory many of
the spleen’s function relate to the digestive system. Huang Qi is
an example of an herb that bridges this gap. It treats the fatigue
associated with spleen qi deficiency while improving immune
function. The digestive tract is rich with GALT (gut associated
lymphoid tissue) of which the spleen is the master lymph gland.
Here we see the relationship between the digestive system and the
immune system. By entering the lung and spleen systems, Huang
Qi improves immune function in a powerful and unique way.
