# Bei Sha Shen

### Glehniae Radix

_sweet, slightly bitter, slightly cold_

#### PRIMARY FUNCTION:

_**Tonify Yin**_

CLASSICAL MANIFESTATIONS:
- Cough
 - Deficiency heat
 - Dry cough
- Dry mouth
 - Yin deficiency patterns
- Thirst
 - Yin deficiency patterns
- Irritability
 - Due to heat
 - Deficiency of yin

Bei Sha Shen is sweet, bitter, and slightly cold. It enters the lung
and stomach systems to treat yin deficiency related pathologies
including dry cough dry parched mouth.

Bei Sha Shen is considered to be a better medicine at nourishing
stomach yin than Nan Sha Shen.

When the body’s yin is deficient then yang becomes excess from
the imbalance. This creates heat referred to as deficiency heat. It
results in irritability. This explains why Bei Sha Shen can treat
irritability because it nourishes yin.

**Contraindications:** Bei Sha Shen should not be prescribed to
patients that present with cold patterns of the lung or stomach
whether deficiency or excess in nature
