# Bai Jie Zi

### Sinapis Semen

_acrid, warm_

#### PRIMARY FUNCTION:

_**Transform Cold Phlegm**_

CLASSICAL MANIFESATIONS:
- Cough
 - Due to cold phlegm
- Chest distention
 - Due to accumulation of phlegm in the upper jiao
- Pain
- Skin disorders
 - Sores
 - Abscesses
- Nodulation
 - Including glandular
- Scrofula

Bai Jie Zi is acrid and warm to break up cold phlegm
accumulations. It enters the lung to treat cough when there is
excess mucus production.

Phlegm gathers to create nodules which Bai Jie Zi can dissipate
especially when the pattern is cold in nature.

Bai Jie Zi does not treat the cause of the cold phlegm
accumulation which may include splenic and pulmonary functions
with a likely deficiency of yang. Other medicines will need to be
prescribed for root cause treatment.

**Channels:** lung

POSSIBILITIES:
- Full sensation in the chest
 - Due to phlegm accumulation
- Chronic cough
 - Due to cold phlegm
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Body aches
- Boils
- Pulmonary disorders
 - Pleurisy
 - Pneumonia
 - COPD
- Lipomas

**Formulas:**
- San Zi Yang Qin Tang
- Xuan Yu Tong Jing Tang
- Yang He Tang

**Contraindications:** do not prescribe Bai Jie Zi to patients
that present with lung deficiency or severe deficiency heat
patterns
