# Bai Fan

Bai Fan is sour, astringent, and cold. The cold property makes it
useful on heat patterns and damp-heat patterns especially
topically. It enters the large intestine, lung, liver, and spleen
systems to treat disorders of the gastrointestinal tract such as
diarrhea or bloody stool and it treats disorders of the lung such as
cough.

**Contraindications:** Bai Fan is primarily for external
application and should be used cautiously when prescribing it to
a patient orally, do not prescribe it orally when the patient has
poor digestive function of if the patient does not present with
patterns of damp-heat
