# Bai Bian Dou

#### PRIMARY FUNCTION:

_**Tonify the Qi**_

CLASSICAL MANIFESTATIONS:

Bai Bian Dou improves digestion through the support of the
spleen and stomach functions. This relates to the exocrine
function of the pancreas through enzyme production and
hydrochloric acid secretion in the stomach. Balancing the
digestive function of the stomach with the digestive function of
the duodenum allows for the pyloric sphincter to efficiently
transition chyme smoothly from the upper gastrointestinal tract to
the lower gastrointestinal tract. The bolus of food enters the
stomach and must liquefy into chyme before the pyloric sphincter
releases the food downward. Failure of this function leads to
indigestion or counterflow qi.

The health of the gastrointestinal tract allows for healthy acid
secreting bacterial flora, also found in the vagina, to populate.
When the intestinal bacteria becomes compromised, the acid
balance becomes unfavorable leading to intestinal complaints.
This negatively affects the vaginal bacteria leading to pathogenic
discharge. For this reason, Bai Bian Dou can also be used to treat
vaginal discharge by improving digestive and intestinal health.
